A group of young travelers accompanies a procession from Shieldsdale heading to Shadowdale to compete in Mae selection, a ceremonial competition between the Dales to a priestess that represents Dales Compact.

The procession is attacked along the journey by a horde of goblins. A wizard tasked with protecting the Mae candidate casts a magical barrier around the group while simultaneously casting a teleportation circle spell as means to escape. The group escapes to Feywild through the teleportation circle just before the barrier fails.
